Up in arms: Activists of the DYFI and the CPI(M) staging a protest in Bangalore on Tuesday . BANGALORE: Activists of the Democratic Youth Federation of India (DYFI), Bangalore district committee, and the Communist Party of India (Marxist) on Tuesday staged a dharna in front of the office of the Director-General of Police here condemning the police lathi-charge on DYFI workers in Mangalore on Monday, in which 30 persons were injured. The demonstrators demanded that the Government take action against the erring police officials and threatened to hold State-wide agitations if action was not initiated. Addressing the protestors, DYFI district president P. Nagaraju alleged that the police lathi-charged DYFI activists who were peacefully protesting against the Mangalore City Corporation for increasing water tariff. The police were instigated by a local leader, he alleged. DYFI leader Lingaraju said: “Mangalore Mayor Ganesh Hosabettu was impatient with the agitators, who met him to submit a memorandum highlighting the lapses on private parties in bill collection. The agitators were lathi-charged when the Mayor was in the office.” The Government should withdraw increase in water tariff and release the DYFI activists who were arrested on false cases, he added. Terming the lathi-charge as “inhuman,” CPI (M) State unit secretary V.J.K. Nair alleged: “Police Inspector Ganapathi and sub-inspector Narayana Baindoor caned the agitating activists to get appreciation from a “political boss.” To cover up the lapses, he said that police booked false cases against the agitators. In a memorandum submitted to the DGP, the party has urged suspension of the police officials responsible for the incident and initiate an inquiry into the incident.
