Action against two electoral officers

Special Correspondent

Naresh Gupta

CHENNAI: Chief Electoral Officer Naresh Gupta said the Election Commission has placed under suspension a booth-level officer and initiated disciplinary action against another for malpractices during the electoral roll verification process.

A press note stated that during the special summary revision of electoral rolls following the delimitation of Assembly constituencies, there were complaints that the designated centres, where claims for inclusion in the rolls were to be made, did not function properly on the special campaign days, August 2 and 3.

“In one case, a booth-level officer (teacher) had given the forms for inclusion to a member of a political party instead of delivering them during house-to-house verification to members of the family whose names are missing in the electoral rolls. He has been placed under suspension,” said Mr. Gupta.

“In another case, a booth-level officer (teacher) told a senior officer (without knowing the latter’s identity) that there was no need to make a house-to-house visit. In this case, disciplinary action has been initiated against the booth-level officer,” he said and warned officers against adopting short-cut methods.

More time for officers

Mr. Gupta said 100 per cent verification by booth-level officers was crucial in the on-going summary revision of electoral rolls. The officers should mark the house and hand over a list containing names of persons in the house who figure in the electoral roll. “Booth- level officers are being given another seven to ten days time beyond August 18 for field verification,” he said.
