Valvil Ori festival showcases tribal culture

Grant for the hills: Minister for Dairy Development U. Mathivanan handing over welfare assistance during Valvil Ori festival in Kolli Hills in Namakkal district.

NAMAKKAL: The annual Valvil Ori festival, which concluded at Kolli Hills on Sunday, attracted a large number of tourists from different parts of the State.

The festival held on August 2 and 3 in the ancient kingdom of celebrated King Valvil Ori, highlighted the indigenous traditions, culture and values of tribal people living in the hills.Minister for Dairy Development U. Mathivanan, inaugurating the festival, assured that the State government would establish a milk chilling facility with a capacity of 5,000 litres in the hills.

Efforts would also be made to start milk producers’ co-operative societies in a few tribal hamlets including Alandur Nadu and Kundur Nadu. He inaugurated a new bus stand in Semmedu, a toilet block and a multi media exhibition during the festival.

He distributed free colour television sets and welfare assistance worth Rs. 2.5 crore to beneficiaries.Union Minister of State for Social Justice Subbulakshmi Jagadeesan, participating in the valedictory of the festival, said that the alternative route to Kolli Hills would be laid shortly.

She called upon the farmers in the hills to take up floriculture and sericulture to enhance their income.Collector U. Sagayam, presiding over the function, said the district administration has initiated concerted efforts to promote tourism in the hills, which would provide more livelihood opportunities to the tribal people.
