Indian shipyard worker electrocuted
Kuala Lumpur: An Indian shipyard worker was electrocuted while cleaning a boat in Singapore, becoming the eighth casualty in the rich city-state’s modern shipyard industry since June this year.
The 20-year-old was part of a team cleaning a ship’s hull with a high-powered jet at DryDocks World Singapore shipyard when he fainted while shifting a powerful spotlight, Strait Times said.
He was later declared dead. Investigations are underway but his death was likely due to electric shock, the country’s Ministry of Manpower (MoM) said.
The Tuas Cresent Shipyard, where the Indian worked, has about 2000 workers, over half of whom are from the subcontinent, the daily said. Following Friday’s incident, the MoM has ordered DryDocks Singapore to stop using electrical equipment until they have been inspected and certified safe for use by “competent” personnel, the daily added. – PTI
