Weightlifting
Monika. NEW DELHI: L. Monika Devi, the lone woman weightlifter selected to compete in the Olympic Games, has tested positive for a steroid and has been withdrawn from the Indian contingent. Monika, who was chosen to compete in the 69-kg class, tested positive in an out-of-competition test conducted by the Sports Authority of India (SAI). The test was done at the National Dope Testing Laboratory (NDTL) here. Monika was selected after two trials in Pune and Bangalore following much controversy over the selection process that also involved the participation of Shailaja Pujari. Sources indicated on Tuesday night that no Indian weightlifter would be participating in the Olympics since there was no move to bring in a substitute at this stage. The Indian Olympic Association (IOA) has been informed about Monika’s dope test report.
