Bangalore: Boluvar Mohammed Kunhi, a powerful short-story writer in Kannada, has over the last few years turned his attention more to children’s literature. His compilations of Kannada nursery rhymes, Santhammanna and Tattu Chappale Putta Magu, have been hailed as monumental efforts at documenting a neglected genre. His work on the Mahatma for children, Paapu Gandhi Bapu Gandhi Aaada Kathe, has won many awards. But here is some good news for those who missed his writings outside the realm of children’s literature. A play based on Boluvar’s eponymous short stories, Swathantryada Ota, will be staged by Samudaya just before the Independence Day. It is directed by Shashidhar Barighat. Samudaya recently organised a seminar on the oeuvre of Boluvar and released an Independence Day greeting card as a run-up to the event. Literary critics who participated in the event spoke of the evolution of Boluvar’s writings over the years. “Swathantryada Ota” will be staged on August 12 and 13 at Ravindra Kalakshetra and on August 23 at Ranga Shankara.
