Tele-film conveying a message, subtly

KOZHIKODE: A campaign to highlight the evils of tobacco can transcend the set paradigm – to tug at your heartstrings, and leave lasting imprints in the mind.

The tele-film ‘Agnisakshiyay’ is one such initiative that conveys a host of sentiments, while harping on the signature message ‘Tobacco is poisonous, keep off the item, do not be a slave to it’ subtly, and through symbolism such as the Great Fire Escape magic feat.

The Malabar Branch of Indian Dental Association has produced the tele-film with subtle hints of the ill-effects, and trauma brought about by addiction to tobacco. The film is the outcome of the highly developed sense of social consciousness of a group of young persons who seek to launch the awareness campaign, intermingled with finer human sentiments.

The majority of the characters in `Agnisakshiyay,’ including the protagonist Dasan Madathil, are addicted to smoking and ‘pan masala.’

A magician, the Great Fire Escape is Dasan’s choice feat. The ticket shows of his dare-devil act are primarily to fund the Upasana Arts and Sports Club, in a nondescript village. The director, P.K. Baburaaj, weaves the story round the village bonded by strong human relationships, and the under currents of tragedy. Concern for fellow human beings, especially those from the lower echelons of society such as the rag-picker Manian’s family, or Syed Alavi, the harmonist who dies of oral cancer, provides touching scenes. The all-pervading camaraderie is the leit motif.

Moments of suspense, as the Great Fire Escape feat is to be performed, add to the value of the portrayal.

K.B. Ganesh Kumar as magician Dasan showcases a brilliant and emotive portrayal supported ably by Vasutty (Binu Purushothaman) and Basheer (Dr. Shaju), among others. Child actor Abhiraj as Maniyan is natural and convincing.

Dr. Binu Purushothaman has penned the story, screenplay and dialogue and musical score comes from Kanesh Punoor.

Dr. C.C. Joseph is the executive producer. The photography of Sivakumar and music of Dr. C.V. Ranjith deserve commendation.

The appearance of Mr. Ganesh Kumar, MLA, as magician Dasan Madathil, and M.K. Muneer, former Minister, as doctor in the film adds a dash of glamour.

P.V. Gangadharan, vice-president, Federation of International Film Producers, performed the switch on ceremony of the 45-minute film, at a programme held at the Indian Dental Association hall here recently.
