Four diarrhoeal deaths reported

Staff Reporter

Eight others admitted to hospital

Outbreak possibly due to consumption of contaminated water during floods

Survey teams assessing the damage caused to property and crops

ADILABAD: The danger of outbreak of epidemics looms large over the areas affected by the floods as four diarrhoeal deaths have been reported from Nagaram in Mancherial mandal while eight others have been admitted to hospital on Wednesday. Tekam Chinnu, 65, Atram Gangubai (60), Tekam Posham (35) had died on Tuesday night while Tekam Anita (25) succumbed on Wednesday.

Mancherial Revenue Divisional Officer A. Prasad said the reason for outbreak of diarrhoea in Nagaram could be consumption of contaminated water during the floods.

Medical and sanitation teams had brought the situation under control on Wednesday. Meanwhile, water has receded in almost all the rivers that were in spate in the district. Only Teegala Orre in Bejjur mandal was still in spate. In Koutala mandal Chintalamanepalli, Gurudupeta, Babasagar and Burupalli still remained cut off. Traffic flow continued to be suspended between Koutala and Bejjur due to damage to roads and bridges. Telephone communication and power supply also continued to be hit.

Kagaznagar MLA Koneru Konappa and Joint Collector G. Ravi Babu visited many flood affected villages and organised relief camps and food for the displaced families. They assured all kinds of help to the victims including construction of new houses.

Survey teams are out assessing the damage caused to property and crops during the two floods. However, the loss looks to be much less that the initial estimates.

According to an official, the crop loss was considerably less in Adilabad, Gudihatnoor, Ichoda and Bazarhatnoor mandals because the cotton and soya bean plants that were flattened by the flooding waters were restored. Teams are also assessing the loss of animal life.
