JAIPUR: Over 20 private power production companies evinced a keen interest in a proposal of the Rajasthan government to purchase 1,500 MW of electricity for the 12th Five Year Plan period here on Wednesday. The demand for power in the State is likely to shoot up by an additional 5,000 MW by the end of the 11th Plan. Rajasthan Vidyut Prasaran Nigam organised an ‘Expression of interest’ conference here to call the offers from private companies by August 19. State Energy Secretary Shrimat Pandey said the corporation would sign long-term power purchase agreements (PPAs) with each company for procuring a minimum of 100 MW electricity. Mr. Pandey said though the installed capacity by 2011-12 was likely to reach 8,225 MW against the present 6,444 MW, the State would still require an additional 5,000 MW for rapid economic development. The 1,500 MW bought from private producers would go to the Jaipur, Jodhpur and Ajmer discoms.
