Couple allege their newborn baby was sold by the hospital staff HUBLI: Following allegation by a couple that their newborn baby has been sold by staff of the Karnataka Institute of Medical Sciences (KIMS), Medical Superintendent of the hospital Shivanand Dodmani on Wednesday issued notices to the doctor concerned and staff of the Department of Gynaecology and Obstetrics. ‘No foul play’Speaking to The Hindu, Dr. Dodmani ruled out any foul play by the hospital staff and clarified that the baby boy was stillborn. He said he had held a preliminary inquiry and found that some confusion had occurred while the information was passed on to the patient’s relatives. “I have sought explanation from the staff on duty. Action will be taken on the basis on their reply and inquiry”, he said. According to Riyaz Ahmed Mulla of Amboli village in Dharwad taluk, he had taken his wife, Yasmin (28), to Dharwad Civil Hospital for delivery on Sunday. Yasmin, who was experiencing labour pain, was admitted to KIMS. Since it was a complicated case, the doctors conducted Caesarean surgery at around 2 a.m. on Monday. Riyaz and his relatives allege that the baby was shown neither to him or his wife. After repeated enquiries, the staff told them that the baby had died. They alleged that they were not even shown the body. N.N. Inamdar, Dharwad district secretary of Communist Party of India, told presspersons here on Wednesday that when Riyaz had approached Vidyanagar Police, they had refused to lodge a complaint. The behaviour of the staff at KIMS had given rise to the suspicion that the baby had been sold, he said. He submitted a memorandum seeking action against the hospital staff to Minister for Public Works C.M. Udasi, who was in Hubli on Wednesday.
