MALAPPURAM: The students of Government Higher Secondary School at Irumbiliyam, near Valanchery, went on the rampage and destroyed furniture, computers and other equipment on Wednesday following the death of a parent who had been summoned to the school by the authorities. Tension gripped the school premises as students turned violent in apparent retaliation for the disciplinary action taken against a few students by the school authorities. It was the death of Abdul Azeez (Abdu), 55, a parent, that provoked the students. Mr. Abdu had been summoned by the school authorities in connection with the suspension of his son, Noushad, along with six others from the school. Mr. Abdu reached the school at 10.30 a.m. and was talking to the teachers when he developed symptoms of chest pain and asked for water. The teachers gave him water, but he collapsed in the staff room. He died on the way to a hospital. The students went on the rampage on learning of Mr. Abdu’s death. A police team led by Dy.SP Abdul Kareem rushed to the school and brought the situation under control. No case has been registered against anyone in connection with the incident. The school has been put under police security following the incident. No classesThe school authorities said there would be no classes for higher secondary students on Thursday and Friday. The Principal has convened an emergency meeting of the parents of Plus Two students at 2.30 p.m. on Friday. The Parent-Teacher Association (PTA) of the school condoled the death of Mr. Abdu.
