Kakinada: Farmers from the coastal areas of Thondangi, Uppada, Kakinada, Tallarevu, Razole and Kapileswarapuram have resolved to stage a dharna in front of the Collector’s office here on August 7 under the aegis of Communist Party of India (CPI) in protest against the proposed Petroleum, Chemical and Petrochemical Investment Region (PCPIR). The CPI has, in a press release, contended that the negative impact of PCPIR on the lives of coastal communities and environment clearly outweigh the benefits expected to be generated by the chemical and petrochemical related industries. The G.O No. 34 pertaining to the PCPIR project apparently overlooked the harmful consequences and nothing was planned to mitigate its impact on the fishermen and others who were heavily dependent on the sea for their livelihoods. The CPI, therefore, decided to stage a protest against the project, which was to be expanded beyond Visakhapatnam and Kakinada in due course without adequate safeguards.
