668 art teachers to be recruited within a month Changes in question paper pattern for 2009-10 to be taken up by department, Minister BANGALORE: There will be no change in the pattern of questions in the Secondary School Leaving Certificate (SSLC) examination for the current academic year 2008-09. The Government has decided to continue the old question paper pattern this year, said Minister for Primary and Secondary Education Vishwesvara Hegde Kageri. Addressing presspersons here on Wednesday, Mr. Kageri said the Government has accepted only some of the recommendations of the expert committee constituted to review the examination pattern of SSLC under the chairmanship of S. Srikanta Swamy. The panel submitted its report in June last suggesting a drastic reduction in objective type of questions. The present system lays emphasis on multiple-choice and short-answer questions and it was introduced in 2006. The question papers are divided into Section A and Section B, with Section A dedicated to multiple-choice questions. The present system has 60 per cent objective and 40 per cent subjective-type questions. RecommendationsThe salient recommendations of the Srikanta Swamy report, besides cutting down on objective-type questions, are introduction of a separate section (Section C) on grammar for the first language, a day’s gap between mathematics, science and social studies examinations, and providing three hours to answer second and third language papers on a par with other subjects. It has said that students should not be given more than five chances to clear the examination. The Minister said the Government was open for discussion with experts and educationists on changing the question pattern. But there was no question of constituting one more panel to study the examination system. The officials of the department and the Minister himself would take a decision on changes in the question pattern for the academic year of 2009-10, Mr. Kageri said. Teacher recruitmentA decision has been taken to recruit 668 art teachers in schools and the process would be completed in a month. A sum of Rs. 50 crore has been earmarked to develop infrastructure in schools located in 114 backward taluks identified by the Nanjundappa Committee on regional imbalances, he said. Referring to the mid-day meal scheme, Mr. Kageri said the daily food expenditure per child had been increased.
