CBI turns tech-savvy to fight corruption

V.S. Palaniappan

COIMBATORE: The Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) of the Central Bureau of Investigation has turned tech savvy to reach out to the people through SMS to highlight the avenues through which they can fight corruption.

The ACB has requested the mobile phone service providers such as Vodafone and Aircel to started despatching SMS to their subscribers. The message reads: “Fight Corruption: Corruption in Central Government Offices/Banks and Public Sector Undertakings could be informed to ACB of the CBI at 044-28-255899 or 94440-49924 (SMS only no voice calls) or through e-mail: sp1accchl@gbi.gov.in.,” says a top CBI official.

Information

With the use of mobile phones becoming widespread, the information is expected to reach a large number of people. To ensure that the message will not clog the network, it is being sent in batches. In the next batch, the CBI sources say, the message will be sent to the subscribers of Airtel and BSNL, besides the other service providers.

The objective, the official says, is to wipe clean the image that the CBI is inaccessible and to make public participation paramount in fighting corruption.

Contact details

The Directorate of Vigilance and Anti-Corruption (DVAC) has directed the State government departments to keep boards at all their offices with the address and contact details of the nearest DVAC office.

The CBI has over 180 Central Government offices, banks and public sector undertakings to maintain vigil. “So far the response is good: at least 100 calls on the landline and nearly 50-60 SMS and e-mails have been received. Complaints pertaining to State government departments are shared with the DVAC,” the official says.
