On SIMI

The Supreme Court’s timely intervention, staying a Special Tribunal’s order lifting the restrictions on SIMI’s activities, is laudable. SIMI is suspected of involvement in the recent blasts in Jaipur, Bangalore and Ahmedabad. Any move to lift the ban on it will erode the people’s confidence in our security system.

Raghu Seshadri,

Chennai

A banned organisation can do more harm than one that is not banned. Members of an open organisation can be easily arrested if they indulge in criminal activities whereas activists of banned organisations usually go underground. A ban on an organisation offers scope for the violation of human rights. Instead, the police should maintain a close watch on the activities of the members of organisations that are suspect.

S. Raghunatha Prabhu,

Alappuzha
