News Analysis
* * An AFP report “Pyramid-shaped K2, a treacherous peak” (“International” page, August 4, 2008) said that the mountain K2 “sits on the border between Pakistan and China.” It is in Pakistan Occupied Kashmir (PoK), but the official line is that the mountain belongs to India. The eleventh and twelfth paragraphs respectively of the report were “The pyramid-shaped K2, which sits on the border between Pakistan and China” and “The K2 is considered by mountaineers to be by far the hardest of the 14 summits over 8,000 metres to scale.” They should have been one sentence: “The pyramid-shaped K2, which sits on the border between Pakistan and China, is considered by mountaineers to be by far the hardest of the 14 summits over 8,000 metres to scale.” * * A sentence in the third paragraph of a report “Coal supply: Union Minister [of State for Coal Santhosh Bagrodia] promises to intervene” (August 5, 2008) was “… While TNEB’s quota is 593 tonnes from the Garepalma mines, that of MSEB is 175 tonnes”, leading to queries. It should have been “million tonnes” in both instances. * * The second paragraph in a report “Terrorism is a response to politics, not religion, says secular forum” (August 5, 2008) was “Speaking at a press conference organised by Anhad here on Monday, he [Asghar Ali Engineer of the All-India Secular Forum] appealed to countrymen not to be misled by religious rhetoric”, leading to queries. “ANHAD” is the contraction of Act Now for Harmony and Democracy. (Three activists Prof. K.N. Panikkar, Harsh Mander and Shabnam Hashmi came together to form ANHAD in the first week of March 2003.) * * A promo (“Newscape” page, August 6, 2008) was “The Caterpillar colours — A colourful pair of caterpillars was found scanning the horizon in a garden in Srikakulam in Andhra Pradesh on Tuesday.” They are not caterpillars but a pair of Painted grasshoppers. (They are also known as Rainbow grasshoppers.) * * Clue 1 Across (The Hindu Crossword 9293, August 4, 2008) was “Difficult dilemma reduces Goan to drink (7,5)”. It should have been (7,4). (The answer was “Gordian Knot” — The Hindu Crossword 9294, August 5, 2008.) It is the policy of The Hindu to correct significant errors as soon as possible.
