Inter-collegiate sports commences

60 students participated in Chess tourney

TIRUCHI: The five-month long inter-collegiate sports extravaganza of the Bharathidasan University got off to start with the chess championship hosted by Urumu Dhanalakshmi College (UDC).

The colleges affiliated to the university in the eight districts - Tiruchi, Pudukottai, Thanjavur, Perambalur, Ariyalur, Nagapattinam, Karur and Tiruvarur – will be participating in more than 30 events to be conducted for both men and women.

“It will be excitement all through with the participating colleges giving their best,” says varsity Department of Physical Education head K. Chandrasekaran.

He also informed that the Bharathidasan University would host the all-India inter-University ball badminton tournament for women in January next year.

The two-day chess tournament, which concluded here on Wednesday, saw participation of 60 students from 30 colleges.

The top six – B. Arul Senthil (Bishop Heber College), R. Mohammed Iqbal (Sudarshan Arts and Science College, Pudukottai), J. Vijayakumar (Poompuhar College, Melaiyur), A. Sheik Dawood (JJ College of Arts and Science, Pudukottai), A. Gopinath (Jamal Mohammed College) and L. Muthukrishnan (Bishop Heber College) – will represent the university at the all-India inter-University chess tournament.

At the valediction, UDC Principal K. Sekar gave away the prizes in the presence of Physical Education Director N.S. Sivakumar.
