Pinarayi Vijayan calls for a strong agitation to counter the ‘anti-people’ policies of the Central government. KOLLAM: Pushing the people into starvation is yet another aspect of the anti-people policies pursued by the United Progressive Alliance (UPA) government, State secretary of the CPI(M) Pinarayi Vijayan said here on Wednesday. He was addressing a public meeting organised in connection with a rally held by the district unit of the Left Democratic Front. Mr. Vijayan said that the Centre was denying rice to the State even for Onam. “The Centre is in no mood to correct its anti-people policies. Hence, a strong agitation of the people is required to counter the same,” he said. The CPI(M) leader said that such policies spearheaded by the Congress had always led to the growth of communal forces in those areas where the Left had no influence. He said that the Indo-U.S. nuclear deal was an agreement that would endanger India in all respects. The deal would in many ways help U.S. President George W. Bush and the Republicans who now stood isolated in that country. Initially, the Samajwadi Party had also opposed the deal. But, surprisingly when crores of rupees began to be spent in the name of the trust vote, the SP took a U-turn on its stand, Mr. Vijayan alleged. “All that should not have happened in a parliamentary democracy happened during the course of the trust vote periodt,” he said. Mr. Vijayan was critical of the stand taken by the Indian Union Muslim League on the nuclear deal. He alleged that the IUML did not have a history of standing by the interests of its cadres. “The party is only concerned about the vested interests of its few leaders. Hence, the decision to stay in power and take sides with the US.” CPI State secretary Veliyam Bhargavan also spoke.
