SMOOTH JOURNEY: The six-lane road, which is part of the National Highway 7, to the new airport near Bangalore. BANGALORE: While most of Bangalore has to make do with indifferent lighting, potholes, spine-breaking speed bumps and poor signage at night, the six-lane highway to the new airport is a driver’s dream. Much of the road is lavishly illuminated; blinkers indicate road curves, lanes and intersections. In truly global style, each of the three lanes is speed-specific. Drivers are surprised at the vast difference in the quality of the road during the day and at night. Travelling during the day can be tiresome while driving at night on the same road is a cinch. The Hindu team drove along the Bellary Road to have a feel of the night along the road on Tuesday. This 35-km drive commences from The Hindu office in cold, windy conditions around 2.30 a.m. This stretch of Bellary Road is not well illuminated as the road is under repair. The car driver shows the stretch of the service road near Sanjay Nagar cross where water clogged during the recent rain. As the team passes over the Hebbal Flyover there is a sudden marked difference on the road. The bright lights make us blink. The blinkers guide drivers, who are asked to maintain speeds of 30 kmph, 60 kmph and 80 kmph speed on the first, second and third lanes, respectively. The team takes a diversion on Bellary Road and enters the trumpet intersection that leads to the international airport. After snacking at the airport it is time to return to the city. The car driver stops midway on Bellary Road where other taxis are parked too. “We prefer to have coffee and snacks at these wayside stalls as they are cheap,” he says.
