Peace disturbed: Youngsters resorting to stonepelting at Wynchpeta in Vijayawada on Wednesday. VIJAYAWADA: Tension reigned in the One Town area, the old city of Vijayawada, on Wednesday after clashes once again broke out between the rival groups that came to loggerheads on Tuesday in the wake of an inter-religious marriage. Wynchpet a and Panja centre virtually turned into a battleground as people belonging to two communities indulged in stone-pelting during the day. More than six people, including Deputy Commissioner of Police U.V.S. Raju and Inspector K. Madhusudan Reddy were injured in the pelting . Despite heavy presence of police, the rampaging mobs fought pitched battlesand resorted to arson. The police caned the miscreants near Gandhi Bomma centre to bring the situation under control. Section 144Commissioner of Police K. V. Rajendranath Reddy imposed Section 144 , prohibiting assembly of five or more persons, carrying of sticks, weapons and explosives under Two Town police station limits. The police took more than 50 people into custody. Though Mr. Reddy tried to bring about rapprochement between the families of the boy and the girl late on Tuesday night, it appeared on Wednesday morning that there would be no trouble anymore, the situation took a turn for the worse in Wynchpeta after 2 p.m. Mr. Madhusudan Reddy, who was leading a team of policemen near a place of worship to disperse the angry mobs which were clashing bitterly, suffered head injury in the pelting spree. The Commissioner said the police would not allow entry of people coming from “outside places like Guntur and Hyderabad”. “We will keep a vigil at railway station and bus stations” he said, insisting that the situation was under control.
