on a mission: NCC cadets, who are on an expedition from Chennai to Kanyakumari for creating awareness on dowry menace, proceeding to Puducherry Assembly on Thursday.

PUDUCHERRY: It is a 1000-km inter-district cycle expedition covering 25 towns and over 100 villages along the East Coast Road during the 15-day journey to create awareness among the people of the dowry menace.

Lt.A.Joseph, who leads a 16-member team of NCC cadets of Sathyabama University, says that the journey which started at the institute on August 6 will culminate at Kanyakumari on August 19 after arousing the conscience of the people, particularly those belonging to the upper strata of society against this social evil which has taken hundreds of innocent lives.

“If a person has some health problem, it can be cured through proper medical treatment but if a society is afflicted with serious social malady, it is very difficult to cure it. As dowry menace has been haunting society, we have decided to undertake this expedition,” he says.

A couple of days ahead of commencing the programme, the young volunteers were trained in repairing the bicycles used for the expedition, he points out.

Through a skit titled, “Dowry free World,” the NCC cadets highlight the ordeals undergone by the young women and their parents, owing to the social evil.

The cadets also underscore the importance of blood and eye donation, national unity, literacy, tree planting, ending child labour and energy conservation.

For night stay colleges and schools en route have been chosen.

When the youngsters met Chief Minister N.Rangasamy at the Assembly complex on Thursday, he commended their timely effort to spread awareness of the issue.
