Visionary: Eye screening camp for Commercial Taxes Department staff in Madurai on Thursday. Minister S.N.M. Ubayadullah is seen. MADURAI: Enforcement activities of the Commercial Taxes Department, which remained suspended, would commence soon. Orders to this effect had already been issued, Commercial Taxes Minister, S.N.M. Ubayadullah, said here on Thursday. The activities were halted for the last one-and-a-half years on account of implementation of value added tax (VAT) regime since January 2007, he said. The Minister was in the city to inaugurate an eye screening camp conducted for Commercial Taxes Department staff by Vasan Eye Care Hospital. Around 500 employees took part in the free camp. While revenue through Commercial Taxes Department prior to implementation of VAT was Rs. 19,500 crore, it was expected by grow by another 20 per cent after the new tax regime came into effect. However, initially, losses were expected and the Central Government had provided a grant to overcome these losses. A sum of Rs. 21,500 crore was generated along with the Central subsidy, he said. On vacant posts in the department, he said that vacancies existed in all departments and that they would be filled up as soon as possible. The Joint Commissioner of Madurai Division, A. Rajaraman, spoke. Review meetIn the evening, the Minister took part in a review meeting along with Principal Secretary and Commissioner of Commercial Taxes Department, T. Jacob.
