High-flying: A Russian artiste in action. Thiruvananthapuram: The Onam festive season in the city will get added fizz with the Great Bombay circus opening its 45-day programme here on August 9. The highlight of the performance is a 12-member troupe from Russia, media coordinator Srihari Nair told a press conference here on Thursday. The members of the troupe are professional artistes qualified from the Tashkent Circus College. The major elements of the circus include the Chinese Roller Act in which an artiste performs acrobatic acts while balancing on a wooden plank placed on five cylindrical rollers; the Cube Pyramid Juggling by three Russian performers; the Russian Palotna Act which involves intricate acrobatic postures by an artiste hanging on two long pieces of cloth and the Chinese Candle Balance Act in which two performers balance 51 lighted candles while doing acrobatic feats. Other items are the Russian Devil Clown Act tailored for children, the Pocket Cycle Act in which the performer pulls out a six-inch cycle out of his pocket and pedals away, along with two other artistes, and the Russian Clown Skipping Act. Elephant Cricket is another major event designed to thrill the audience. The circus comprises 100 artistes and 64 performing animals including elephants, horses, camels and birds.
