Man gets jail for three years over wife’s death

Special Correspondent

MADURAI: Mahila Court Sessions Judge E. M. K. S. Siddarthar on Thursday ordered a 30-year-old man to undergo three years of imprisonment and awarded Rs. 1,000 as fine after he was found guilty in connection with his wife’s death.

According to the prosecution, Thangapandi Ammal (27) of Elamanoor near here married a fruit vendor S. Muthuveeran (32) of Vivekananda Street, Mathichiyam, about six years ago. The couple had two daughters. On December 17, 2004, Thangapandi Ammal was found hanging in Muthuveeran’s house. Though she was taken to Government Rajaji Hospital, she was declared brought dead.

Foul play suspected

Though Mathichiyam police had registered a case of unnatural death, Thangapandi Ammal’s father Shanmugam alleged that he suspected foul play in his daughter’s death.

Preliminary inquiries revealed that she was harassed by her in-laws to bring more dowry.
