Well-crafted: A Tanjore painting displayed at the mela in Mysore on Thursday. MYSORE: JSS Urban Haat will host ‘Varamahalakshmi Mela’, an exhibition of arts and crafts to mark Varamahalakshmi festival here from Friday. The 10-day-long mela, which concludes on August 17, will attract artisans from across the country. Special designer dress material and attractive ornaments from Tamil Nadu; zardosi, batik and embroidered saris, cushion covers, jute bags and home decorative items from West Bengal; printed and cotton saris from Madhya Pradesh, handlooms from Andhra Pradesh; creative pieces in bamboo from Assam; crafts from Uttar Pradesh and sandalwood artefacts; and silk saris from Karnataka will be on display. Established by the JSS Mahavidyapeetha and the Union Ministry of Textiles, Government of India, at a cost of Rs. 2.75 crore, the Urban Haat campus is spread over five acres of land in the Hebbal Industrial Area and will have theme-based exhibitions throughout the year. The Urban Haat also provides training to artisans and exposes them to modern techniques in the production of their wares. It had also announced to rope in experts to help create new designs to cater to changing tastes.
