Staff Correspondent

The project cost has been estimated at Rs. 8.3 crore

Madikeri: The proposal given by president of the Kodagu Zilla Panchayat Deerghakeshi Shivanna to the Karnataka Urban Water Supply and Drainage Board (KUWS&DB) to implement underground drainage system works in Kushalnagar, involving Rs. 8.3 crore, has been submitted to the Government seeking approval, according to sources here on Tuesday.

Ms. Shivanna submitted the proposal to the Chairman and Managing Director of the KUWS&DB recently.

The Board sent the proposal to the Secretary, Urban Development Department, in the last week of May. A survey in this regard was conducted by a consultant agency at a cost of Rs. 4.37 lakh.

This agency had estimated the cost of the project at Rs. 8.3 crore.

Ms. Shivanna had in her proposal stated that the Cauvery was getting polluted as storm water, drain water, wastes from small industry, wastes from slaughterhouses and garbage were entering the river, which was a prime source of drinking water to many.

Contamination of the Cauvery could lead to diseases in the coming days, she had said in the proposal.

Following this, the Chairman and Managing Director of the KUWS&DB had sought permission from the Government seeking clearance for the proposal.

Ms. Shivanna also wrote to the Secretary of the Finance Department seeking early clearance of the project in view of the serious consequences contamination of the Cauvery could have on people.

The proposal had been sent to the Urban Development Department seeking permission for the project, she said in the letter.

The Mysore division of the KUWS&DB and its Kushalnagar sub-division had been informed of the developments.
