Governments accused of neglecting Upper Bhadra Irrigation project Local unit of the sangha plans agitation in Chitradurga on August 18 Chitradurga: President of the Rashtriya Kisan Sangha Virendra Sharma said on Thursday that the crisis in the agricultural sector could be resolved only if the Union Government framed a comprehensive agriculture policy. HardshipAddressing presspersons here, he alleged that owing to “anti-farm” policies, farmers were put to hardship. Writing off interest on farm loans would not help in solving the problems faced by farmers. Mr. Sharma said that the shortage of fertilizers and the increasing cost of other farm inputs had added to the woes of farmers. He urged the Government to formulate farmer-friendly policies. The “wrong” policies forced farmers to commit suicide. With regard to mining, he said that it was rampant not only in Karnataka, but also in other parts of the country. Resources such as iron ore was national property. But this valuable property had been helping only a few people. Stating that over 38 crore people in the country were below the poverty line, he said the Government should frame policies that helped all sections of society. He demanded that the Centre nationalise the mining sector. Referring to the Upper Bhadra Irrigation Project, he accused the successive State governments of neglecting it. He said that the sangha would organise its south-zonal working committee meeting in Bangalore on August 9 and 10 to discuss various farm-related issues. General secretary of the State unit of the sangha Konche Shivardurappa said that on August 18, the sangha would organise an agitation in front of the Deputy Commissioner’s office here in protest against the Government’s “anti-farm” policies.
