SHIMOGA: Have hostels in Shimoga district become centres of goondaism? This question was posed by Minister for Food and Civil Supplies Hartalu Halappa and MLA from Shimoga Rural K.G. Kumaraswamy at the Karnataka Development Programme review meeting conducted by Chief Minister B.S. Yeddyurappa here on Wednesday. They said that youths, who were not students, were taking shelter in government hostels where pro-naxalite literature was being circulated. They said that the authorities had failed to take any action to curb such disturbing activities in hostels. Mr. Kumaraswamy said that when he visited the hostel located on N.T. Road here recently he found parents and other relatives living with students there. Mr. Yeddyurappa, who took serious note of this, asked, “Is it goondaraj?”. He directed the officials of the Social Welfare Department to rid the hostels of the rowdy and naxalite elements within one month.
