However, no programme can be organised in the hall for at lease two more months BERHAMPUR: The reconstructed version of more than a century old Jubilee Town Hall in the city was inaugurated on Thursday. However, no cultural function or play can be organised in this auditorium for at least two more months. It is yet to be ready for such functions. The auditorium is yet to have seating arrangement. Its walls and ceiling are yet to have proper covering of acoustic material. It is also not having a sound system. The air-conditioning of the auditorium is also awaiting proper power connection. But these factors did not prove to be a stumbling block for the inaugural ceremony. The organisers were too happy that a comparably small conference hall on the first floor of the large auditorium was ready for use. Act in hasteThe half-completed hall was inaugurated by Union Minister for Rural Development Chandrasekhar Sahu in the presence of Berhampur MLA R.C.C. Patnaik. Leaders of political parties and the local municipal council seemed to be in a haste to inaugurate it as the State Election Commission is about to issue the notification for municipal elections. It would put in restrictions on such inaugural functions. And the politicians did not want to take any chances and miss out an inauguration ceremony. After completion, the town hall would have an air-conditioned auditorium with a seating capacity of around 800 and a conference hall on its first floor. According to the engineers of the municipality, who are monitoring the reconstruction of the auditorium, it will take at least two more months to get the auditorium ready for its real use. The ancient town hall of British era was demolished for reconstruction in 2002 as it was seriously damaged during super cyclone of 1999. It was managed with minor repair works till 2002. AP aidEven the Andhra Pradesh government had sanctioned Rs. 5 lakhs for reconstruction of the town hall.
