Nagercoil
Nagercoil: The villagers living on the banks of Pazhayar and Valliyar rivers here have made a suggestion to the Coca-Cola India to reconstruct the damaged check dams. The vice-president of Coca-Cola, Deepak Jolly, who visited the district recently to hand over the keys of the houses constructed for the tsunami-affected fishermen community in Simon Colony, said that water was vital for realising the full potential of the agricultural sector in the district. The agricultural output, however, depended up on monsoons, as nearly 60 per cent of the area sown was dependent on rainfall. Therefore water resources, with ground water being a major contributor, played a dominant role in not only the development of agriculture, but in the maintenance of people’s livelihood also. The Coca-Cola was exploring the ways and means to adopt a village in connection with eradicating poverty from the society in the district. Immediate steps would be taken to ensure the welfare of people living on the banks of the rivers. The Coca-Cola would implement the project including desilting water bodies, including recreating the ponds and making the bund (check dam) with strengthened stone (stone riveting). Rs. 5 lakh spent for renovation of canalAs part of social service, a sum of Rs.5 lakh had been spent for the renovation of Gangaikondan canal for the benefit of farming community in the tail end areas of Chittar river to under take agriculture activities. It has also been decided to adopt 10 anganwadi centres in Manur panchayat union in Tirunelveli district as a part of Corporate Social Responsibility Activities. Under this programme, furniture, gas stoves, renovation of buildings and other play materials would be provided to the respective anganwadis. The amount would be handed over to the Collector of Tirunelveli at the earliest. Steps would also be taken to promote rural games including Kabadi, Pandi, Kiliyanthattu, kho-kho, Ona Panthu and Koli Kundu. Martial arts, including silampattam, would also be promoted in various parts of the district. Similarly the Coca-Cola India handed over the key for 41 houses recently to the tsunami affected fishermen community in the Simon Colony. As per the norms of the Pollution Control Board, the company has raised various trees (6,000) in Gangaikondan (Bottling plant) particularly with in the factory campus itself to ensure the area free from any kind of pollution, said Deepak Jolly.
