Delhi BJP president Harsh Vardhan NEW DELHI: Delhi BJP president Harsh Vardhan has accused the Sheila Dikshit government of not coming out with a single welfare scheme for the residents of jhuggi-jhonpri dwellers and unauthorised colonies in the past 10 years but unleashing a slew of populist announcements now to woo them because the Delhi Assembly elections are round the corner. The BJP leader said the Congress-led government had also launched a publicity blitz to take the focus off its failure to bring in schemes for the marginalised and poor sections of society. “Now the party has announced a scheme for allotment of multi-storey flats to residents of JJ clusters and urban poor and has invited applications. Why was not a single flat allotted to these poor persons all these years? With a few months to go for the elections and only 10,000 of the over 4 lakh promised flats being ready, the scheme is a complete sham,” he charged. Likewise, Dr. Vardhan termed the announcement about provisional certificates for unauthorised colonies as an “election stunt”. He said the Congress had tried to mislead the people by making the announcement about regularising all unauthorised colonies only one month before the MCD elections. Yet, he said, people were not fooled and they voted the Congress out of power. “Now in view of the Delhi Assembly elections, the Congress is again making announcements about regularising these colonies by issuing provisional certificate,” he said, adding that the Capital’s citizens understand the real intention of the Congress government and would not be misled by it. The BJP leader said the camp that was to be organised from August 1 at Indira Gandhi Indoor Stadium for issuing provisional certificates for regularisation of unauthorised colonies also had to be postponed till August 8 due to strong protests by the residents of these colonies. “When residents of these colonies came to know that the maps to be submitted in the camp by the residents’ welfare association need to show the provision for roads, schools, hospitals and parks in place of the existing houses, they strongly objected to it. The conditions and guidelines for regularisation of these colonies under the Master Plan are so stern that they cannot be implemented,” Dr. Vardhan said.
