Hydrocarbon prospecting soon in Guntur, Krishna

Ramesh Susarla

GUNTUR: At a time when hydrocarbon reserves are depleting worldwide and Indian petroleum products import bills are mounting by the day, the government of India has given permission to Cairn Energy India Private Limited to do on-shore prospecting in 1,700 sq.km. in Guntur and Krishna districts.

The prospecting would begin in the next six to eight months once the environmental clearance is received for the Rs. 500 crore project to be taken up in nine mandals of Krishna and 11 mandals of Guntur district by digging 20 wells of 3,000 to 4,000 metres. Under production sharing contract (PSC) the government has allotted KG-ONN-2003/1 on shore block on both sides of Krishna river to Edinburgh-based Cairn Energy Plc through its Indian arm.

Currently engaged in such operations at nine locations countrywide including two off-shore sites in Ravva in Andhra Pradesh, it would temporarily acquire about 2.2 hectares of land at each well drill site for a temporary period of two to three months.

The exact location of these drill points would be determined as and when the drilling progresses and prospects of natual gas and oil become known as per the Environmental Impact Assessment Report of the Gurgaon-based Cairn Energy India Limited got done by Hyderabad-based Vimta Labs Limited.

In the 68 km x 28 km rectangular block some portions of Krishna Wild Life Sanctuary, Adavuladeevi, Amudalapalli, Nizampatnam, Lankavanidibba Reserve Forest blocks, also are included. The study was conducted during pre-monsoon period (May 2008) and Public Hearing would also be conducted in both the district some time in the second week of September.
