State farm awards announced

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Anthikkad Kolpadavu Padasekhara Committee, a group farming unit in Thrissur district, bagged the State government’s ‘Nelkathir Award’ for excellent performance in paddy production in 2006-07.

Announcing the award here on Thursday, Agriculture Minister Mullakara Ratnakaran said this group farming unit managing a large polder of 668 hectares owned by 2,200 farmers could increase the per hectare annual yield to 6.3 tonnes from 3.8 tonnes through efficient handling of the farm operations.

The Padasekhara Committee also raised a revolving fund of Rs.5 lakh for launching crop, reduced the costs by 25 per cent and made optimum use of machines for the farm operations, Mr. Ratnakaran said. The award carries a purse of Rs.2 lakh and gold medal.

Winners

The following are the winners of the other farm awards: Johny George, Mundanmudi, Idukki district (best farmer); Sabira Mohammed Moosa, Perinjanam, Thrissur district (best horticulturist);

Siddique N. Nalakathu, Nilambur, Malapuram district (best vegetable farmer); K.R. Chandran, Kamakshi village, Idukki district (best farmer from the backward sections); K.V. Madhavi, Neeleswaram, Kasaragod district (best farmer among women);

T.P. Rameshan, Thiruvaniyoor, Ernakulam district (best dairy farmer); M.C. Mohammed, Chittari, Kasaragod district (best poultry farmer); P.G. Krishnakumar, Agriculture Officer, Thiruvalvamala, Thrissur district (best field official); and C. George Thomas, Associate Professor, Horticulture College, Vellanikara, Thrissur district (best farm scientist).

All these awards carry cash prizes ranging from Rs.25,000 to Rs.1 lakh, in addition to gold medals.

Award for AIR

The Thiruvananthapuram station of All India Radio would get a special jury award for its daily farm information programme, the Minister said.
