HYDERABAD: The State government has decided to open special counters for sale of rice at reasonable prices to provide relief to the families hit by the steep hike in price of rice. The common variety rice will be sold at Rs. 14 a kilo while the fine variety would be made available for Rs. 16 a kilo through 33 counters and two mobile units in the twin cities from August 10. Counters will be opened across the State before the month-end and each family would be provided 25 kg rice a month as part of the programme. This was decided at a meeting convened by Chief Minister Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy on Thursday to review the increase in price of rice. The meeting was attended by Ministers K. Rosaiah (Finance), Konathala Ramakrishna (Commercial Taxes), K.V. Krishna Reddy (Civil Supplies) and N. Raghuveera Reddy (Agriculture). Briefing reporters later, Mr. Ramakrishna and Mr. Raghuveera Reddy said the government had decided to crack the whip on traders, millers and others who were illegally hoarding the commodity. The provisions of the AP Scheduled Commodities Order, hitherto applied for pulses, would be invoked with immediate effect to restrict storage of rice and edible oils. High level teams with Civil Supplies department as nodal agency and comprising officials from Commercial Taxes, Marketing, Vigilance and Enforcement and Transport would be constituted to monitor the stock situation and check the movement of rice/paddy to other States.
