Rs. 20,000 to be deposited in girl child’s name Panel to be formed to monitor progress of welfare schemes BANGALORE: The Government has doubled its contribution for the Bhagyalakshmi scheme for the girl child, introduced two years ago. Under the scheme, the Government has decided to deposit Rs. 20,000 in the name of every girl child born after August 1, 2008, in a family living below the poverty line. Earlier, the Government was depositing Rs. 10,000 in the name of each girl child. Briefing presspersons about the decisions taken by the State Cabinet on Thursday, Minister for Rural Development and Panchayat Raj Shobha Karandlaje said the objective of doubling of the deposit was to enable the girl to obtain an education loan of up to Rs. 50,000 for studies after the 12th standard. The Government had tied up with the LIC for implementing the scheme. ObjectiveInitially, the objective of the scheme is to provide financial security with the accumulated value of the deposit, apart from ensuring continued education and discouraging child labour and child marriage. The Cabinet also decided to buy 150 hi-tech ambulances under the newly announced “Arogya Kavacha” health scheme. A sum of Rs. 10 crore has been allocated for it in the State Budget. The Government will purchase 517 ordinary ambulances. Guru Nanak Bhavan in Bangalore will be given on lease to the National School of Drama for undertaking theatre activities. The Cabinet decided to release Rs. 206 crore to be paid as compensation to 1,700 farmers of Bagalkot district whose lands were submerged by Krishna waters following the construction of the Alamatti dam. Panel to be formedFor timely implementation of various budget schemes, an eight-member committee will be formed to monitor the progress of the schemes. The Chief Minister has been authorised to appoint ministers to the committee. Administrative approval was given to release Rs. 35.46 crore for implementing a drinking water project to supply water from the Bheema river to Gurmitkal town and surrounding villages, the Minister said. To fill vacancies in pre-university colleges, she said the Cabinet decided to appoint 2,420 retired teachers during the current academic year. They will be paid a monthly honorarium of Rs. 5,000, the Minister said.
