CHENNAI: Reduced inflows into Karnataka Reservoirs viz Kabini Dam and Krishnaraja Sagar on Thursday will have its impact on receipt of water at Mettur Reservoir in the coming weeks. Though the Mettur Reservoir received 22,000 cusecs on Thursday morning as against 22,500 cusecs on Wednesday, the current inflow may not sustain in the coming weeks, according to Public Works Department officials here. The present realisation is due to release of 12,000 cusecs from Kabini Dam and 10,000 cusecs from Krishnaraja Sagar on Wednesday as these two reservoirs together had received more than 20,000 cusecs. But on Thursday Kabini Dam received 5,200 cusecs and KRS 10,000 cusecs. As Kabini reached its full capacity of 18 tmc (thousand million cubic) feet, 4,700 cusecs of water was released from the dam. From KRS only 5,500 cusecs was released compared to the inflow of 10,000 cusecs as its storage was still 6.5 tmc ft short of its capacity 45 tmc ft. In the absence of substantial rains in catchment areas of Kabini and KRC in the last two days, inflow at the Mettur Reservoir is likely to come down further. Medikeri received 11 mm rain, the officials said. The current storage at the Mettur Reservoir on Thursday was 26 tmc ft as against the capacity of 93.4 tmc ft. S. Ranganathan, general secretary of the Cauvery Delta Farmers Association, is confident that the South West monsoon would not disappoint farmers as it is considered to be the most dependable one.
