All benefits to teachers to continue

Staff Reporter

COIMBATORE: Higher Education Minister K. Ponmudi on Thursday visited the Government Arts College here to discuss with the teachers and students the proposal of the State Government to convert the college into a unitary university.

He promised that the college would continue to receive all benefits. Teachers will have the option to seek a transfer to other Government colleges.

“The university will be run with the present faculty. Senior staff members will be made the Vice-Chancellor and Registrar. Once it becomes a university, students too will get many benefits,” the Minister said.

S. Tamilmani, faculty and vice-president of the Tamil Nadu Government College Teachers’ Association said: “We are totally opposed to the proposal. We have told that to the Minister. A decision on behalf of all the Government colleges will be made after the State executive meeting of the association at Kumbakonam on August 16. The decision will be conveyed to the committee.”

Students wanted to know whether a change of Government will affect the benefits.
