Transport Department denies collecting excess fee for address change

Coimbatore: The Transport Department has clarified that collection of fee for effecting change of address in driving licence are as per the relevant Central Motor Vehicle Rules, Tamil Nadu Motor Vehicle Rules and Government Orders.

Statement

The Deputy Transport Commissioner, Coimbatore Circle, T. Gunasekaran issued a statement in response to the news item published on Wednesday wherein the Secretary of Coimbatore Consumer Cause (CCC) had accused the Transport Department of collecting Rs. 315 for effecting change of address on driving licence stating that the fee was equal to the fee collected for issuing a fresh licence.

License

In the statement, Mr.Gunasekaran said that as per Rule 32 of Central Motor Vehicle Rules 1989 fee for the issue of driving licence in form number 7 was Rs 200 including the cost of computerised chip.

As per Rule 49 of the Tamil Nadu Motor Vehicle Rules 1989 fee for change of address was Rs 15.

Service charge

The Government of Tamil Nadu in addition to the above had issued a GO Ms No 649 dated June 5 fixing service charge for various services rendered by the Transport Department wherein it was mentioned that Rs 100 and Rs 50 should be collected as service charge for effecting change of address in the Non-Transport Driving Licences and Transport Driving Licences respectively.

Hence, the Department was collecting Rs 265 (Rs 200 plus Rs 15 plus Rs 50) for Transport Driving Licence and Rs 315 (Rs 200 plus Rs 15 plus Rs 100) for non-Transport Driving Licences for effecting change of address in the driving licence now being collected as per Motor Vehicle Act and Rules and Government orders issued.
