Immediate response: Rural Industries Minister Pongalur N Palanisamy (second right) handing over orders to a petitioner at the Corporation’s Makkalai Thedi Programme in Coimbatore on Wednesday. — Coimbatore: The Coimbatore Corporation’s ‘Makkalai Thedi’ (Towards People), a grievance redressal programme held at Varadarajapuram evoked a good response. As many as 613 applicants benefited from the scheme, aimed at finding solutions to the problems of the people. The Coimbatore Corporation has so far conducted five such programmes of going to the area of the applicants in 28 wards clearing applications relating to building plan approval, drinking water supply new connections, change of names in property tax assessment and drinking water supply connection besides issue of birth and death certificates. The five programmes helped as many as 3,697 applicants. On Wednesday, the programme conducted at Varadarajapuram Kalyana Mandapam in Singanallur for eight wards in the East Zone benefitted as many as 613 applicants. The programme was inaugurated Mayor, R. Venkatachalam in the presence of Deputy Mayor, N. Karthik, Commissioner, V.K. Shanmugam, leader of the ruling party in the Corporation Council, R.S. Thirumugam, leader of the Opposition, V.N. Udayakumar, East Zone Chairman, S.M. Samy. On Wednesday as many as 32 applications for new drinking water supply connections, four seeking survey extracts, nine seeking building plan approval, 186 applications seeking name change in Property Tax Assessment, four applications for Vacant Land Tax, 195 seeking Property Tax Assessment, 51 applications seeking issue of Birth and Death certificates and 45 applications seeking name change in drinking water supply connections were processed. There were 87 petitions seeking street lights, road and drainage facilities which were taken up for processing and further action. OrdersLater in the afternoon, Minister for Rural Industries and Animal Husbandry, Pongalur N. Palanisamy handed over the orders to the applicants. He exhorted the officials to deal with applicants and render quick service at the same speed even across the counters. He also pointed out that the ‘Makkalai Thedi’ scheme had been introduced in the Chennai Corporation also. Corporation officials told reporters that Radio Frequency Identity Cards will be issued to the 750 corporation staff working in the main office, four zonal offices and primary health centres. The swiping of the card would mark the attendance for the staff. In the next phase, the authorities had proposed to introduce identity cards with thumb impression for the 2,600 sanitary workers working with the Corporation.
