Sensex extends gains

MUMBAI: Market bellwether Sensex added 43.71 points to stay positive for the third day on Thursday, which saw investors exercising caution ahead of inflation data, amid mixed global cues.

The Bombay Stock Exchange 30-share Sensex moved in a range of 15280.06 and 14992.97 before closing the day at 15117.25, a rise of 0.29 per cent over Wednesday.

Operators and retail investors turned cautious ahead of the release of inflation data, which was released well after market hours and showed a marginal 0.03 percentage point increase.

In three straight days, the Sensex has risen by 539.38 points or 3.70 per cent.

The S&P CNX Nifty of the National Stock Exchange also edged up by 6.30 points to 4523.85 from last close.

Consumer durables and auto counters attracted good buying support, while capital goods suffered a setback on profit selling.

Global cues were mixed as Wall Street showed positive trend on Wednesday while most of the Asian indices ended mixed.

European markets were trading firm.

Rupee steady

The rupee on Thursday ended steady at 42.07/08 against the dollar, as selling by investors in the equities market washed away the nearly 19 paise gain notched by the Indian currency.

In a fairly active trade at the interbank foreign exchange market, the rupee resumed higher at 41.96/97 a dollar from previous close of 42.07/08 and touched a high of 41.88 initially. — PTI
