TIRUCHI: In an effort to reinforce Activity Based Learning (ABL), the Government has decided to provide colour television sets and DVD players to all government high, higher secondary, and panchayat union primary and middle schools in the State within a month under the Sarva Shiksha Abiyan (SSA) scheme. The television sets and DVD players would be supplied to 30,000 schools to improve the quality of teaching through the audio-visual mode and for easier understanding, M.P. Vijaykumar, Honorary Advisor to SSA told reporters here on Thursday. Education Department has already brought out a compact disc on “Simply English” in bilingual mode to promote listening and speaking skills of the children. As a pilot measure, the CDs would be given to 10 schools in each block for testing on Friday. Stating that efforts would be taken to make more further improvements in ABL, he said that one such way was through the audio-visual mode and supply of supplementary materials such as books containing pictures and photographs to improve curiosity and reading skill of the students. The supplementary materials were mainly meant for class I and II students, he said. A survey conducted in 4,000 schools a few months ago had revealed that the confidence level, esteem, thinking capacity and social development of the students had improved after the introduction of the ABL. Mr. Vijaykumar who inspected few government and aided schools in different places in the district said that ABL implementation was good and the performance extraordinary. He held a discussion with Assistant Educational Officers and Block Resource Supervisors.
