There exists a need to prevent disability: VSI president

“These diseases if unattended can have grave consequences”

NEW DELHI: Underlining the need for more attention to be paid to vascular diseases and their prevention and treatment, Delhi Health Minister Yoganand Shastri has said lack of awareness both among the public and even the medical fraternity could hamper proper treatment for patients with vascular diseases.

Dr. Shastri was speaking at a meeting organised by the Vascular Society of India earlier this week that was attended by leading vascular surgeons from across the country.

VSI president K.R. Suresh said: “Amputations, secondary to arterial diseases, particularly in diabetic patients, are on the rise. There exists a current need to prevent disability and consider foot salvage in appropriate cases.”

He added that aortic aneurysms, deep vein thrombosis and venous diseases are some of the many vascular diseases known to afflict people. These diseases require highly specialised treatment and if unattended can have grave consequences.

Stating that it was the mandate of the Society to create a dedicated department of vascular and endovascular surgery in the country, VSI treasurer Ashok Gupta said: “A nationwide online deep vein thrombosis registry has been planned and this will be the first of its kind in the country.

“We believe that these efforts by the VSI will go a long way in providing positive health to the senior population of the country. The VSI is holding a number of public seminars, conferences and free detection camps to further the cause.”
