MANGALORE: A two-day conference on “The future of areca nut” will be held under the auspices of Areca nut Research and Development Foundation, Mangalore, from Saturday here. The conference will focus on four important topics: production of areca nut – present status and future prospects; marketing of areca nut – present and future; impact of domestic, regional and international policies on areca nut trade; and scope for value addition in areca nut, a press release said. The areca nut growers, representatives of co-operative sector, researchers, government officials from Kerala, Karnataka and the Union Government will discuss these issues during the conference. About 200 delegates, including official representatives from the Aceh Province of Indonesia and Australia, are expected to attend it. The conference would attempt at finding alternative uses of areca nut. The world was witnessing a paradigm shift in agriculture marketing. Chief Minister B.S. Yeddyurappa will address the conference on Saturday.
