NEW DELHI: The quasi-judicial body, Appellate Tribunal for Electricity (APTEL), will soon get a new chairman and technical members that are required for it to function. The energy tribunal APTEL has not been able to carry out its functions after Justice Anil Dev Singh’s tenure as chairperson came to an end this past May and the terms of two its members, H.L. Bajaj and A.A. Khan, also expired. The Appellate Tribunal consist of a chairperson and three other members. Every bench constituted by the chairperson consists of at least one judicial member and one technical member. According to sources, while a former judge of the High Court will be appointed chairperson, Mr. Bajaj and Mr. Khan are likely to be appointed for a second time as technical members for a two-year term. The APTEL currently has Justice Manju Goel as judicial member and Mahesh B.Lal, as technical member (P&NG). As on May 12, 2008, there were 745 appeals/petitions before the APTEL, of which 630 appeals/petitions have been disposed of. “There are several crucial cases filed before the Tribunal and any delay in the appointments will further hold up the cases. The Union Power Ministry will have to soon take a call on the filling of the vacant posts,” said sources.
