Many customers in E7 sub-division got inflated bills Bescom has blamed it on computer problem Bangalore: Several consumers coming under E7 sub-division of Bangalore Electricity Supply Company (Bescom) were shocked to see their bill for July almost double their average billing amount. One such consumer approached The Hindu on Thursday with copies of the bill. Rahul R., a resident of NGEF Layout, said that on an average, he paid Rs. 300 towards electricity bills. “This time, I received a bill for Rs. 518. I thought it was a mistake only with my bill. But later I found that several people in my apartment had received bills for almost double their average billing amount,” he said. He said that the Bescom authorities had not taken into account the payment of the previous month’s bill and added the amount as arrears. “I make the payment through Electronic Clearance System. The amount gets directly credited from my bank account. So, there is no question of defaulting on payment,” he said. Another consumer from S.G. Palya, near C.V. Raman Nagar, said the payment he had made online through an agent had not been credited. “I was shocked to see the bill. I went and checked with the agent, who enquired with Bescom authorities. They blamed it on a server problem.” He said that he had been making electricity bill payment through the agent for the past one year. “I believe it could be because of the server error, as this is the first time that such a thing has happened,” he added. Bescom officials said that because of the server problem, the reconciliation of the electricity bill payments made online had been affected. “This was unexpected and not intentional. We are yet to ascertain how many people have been affected. We are looking into the problem and revised bills will be issued as soon as possible,” an official said.
