Ministers eye ‘suitable’ seats, sitting members sore

Ravi Reddy

HYDERABAD: Following the delimitation of Assembly and Lok Sabha constituencies, quite a few ministers in the Union and the State Governments are grappling with the problem of finding new seats to seek re-election.

Prominent leaders

With seven out of the 42 Lok Sabha constituencies being scrapped and replaced with new ones, the sitting members are searching for alternative seats to keep their political careers afloat. With many State ministers too launching the hunt for new seats, several MLAs are becoming jittery over their future. Prominent among the Union ministers and MPs who will have to seek a change in their constituencies are: D. Purandeswari (Bapatla), S. Jaipal Reddy (Miryalaguda), Sarvey Satyanarayana (Siddipet SC), and V. Balashowry (Tenali). Panabaka Lakshmi, who now represents Nellore (SC), is eyeing Tirupati (SC) which is now held by Chinta Mohan. Ms. Purandeswari (Bapatla) is proposing to contest from either Rajahmundry, Visakhapatnam or Ongole and Mr. Balashowry is pitching for Narasaraopet.

Mr. Jaipal Reddy is seeking the Nalgonda seat and veteran Congress leader G. Venkataswamy may vacate the seat in favour of his son and Labour Minister G. Vinod from Peddapalli LS seat. His younger son and industrialist G. Vivekananda may contest from Chennur SC Assembly constituency.

As for the State Ministers, Information Technology Minister R. Damodar Reddy and Major Irrigation Minister Ponnala Lakshmaiah are said to lobbying for the ticket from newly created Bhongir Lok Sabha seat. Tribal Welfare Minister D. S. Redya Naik may be asked to shift to Mahabubabad Lok Sabha (ST) constituency.

State Ministers who are seeking new seats are: J. Geeta Reddy (Gajwel) - Zaheerabad SC; Md. Fareeduddin (Zaheerabad) - newly created Zaheerabad LS seat; Sambhani Chandrasekhar (Palair SC) - Madhira SC constituency; M.Venkata Ramana Rao (Kuchinapudi) – Repalle; Pinnamaneni Venkateswara Rao (Mudinepalli) - Gudivada or Kaikalur; and N. Raghuveera Reddy (Madakasira) – Rayadurgam.
