‘Wet coal’ leads to tripping of power units

Special Correspondent

HYDERABAD: Two 210 units of the Rayalaseema Thermal Power Station at Muddanur were manually tripped on Thursday due to ‘wet coal’ problem.

The tripping led to a sudden loss of 420 MW, crippling the supply system. The State grid has already lost 1,038 MW due to shortage of gas and lignite and technical snags.

To meet a demand of 156 million units on Thursday with cuts, APTransco was forced to increase the purchases from traders in the open market to 18 mu and overdraw 11 mu from the Central generation stations paying penalty price. An artificial coal shortage cropped up at Muddanur following failure of unloading operations from the coal rakes. The coal that arrived in rakes from the coalfields was found to be “very wet” and did not drop when the wagons and chutes were slided.
