Rice stock position comfortable

Negotiations are on for purchasing toor dhal by floating international tenders
CHENNAI: Rice stock position in the State is comfortable with Civil Supplies Corporation having two months’ stock on hand for the public distribution system.
At present about 185 lakh cardholders are entitled for rice at Rs.2 a kg. As against the monthly off take of 2.75 lakh to 2.85 lakh tonnes of rice at the PDS, the Corporation has five lakh tonnes both as rice and paddy.
Besides, the State is getting a monthly allotment of 2.94 lakh tonnes of rice from the Central pool, including 1.26 lakh tonnes from above the poverty line (APL), 1.04 lakh tonnes from the below the poverty line (BPL) and the rest from the ‘Antyodaya Anna Yojana’ scheme, according to Food Department officials here.
Negotiations are on for purchasing toor dhal by floating international tenders.
The State government is supplying toor dhal at Rs.32 a kg, black gram at Rs.36 a kg, palmolein at Rs. 40 per litre and fortified atta at Rs.11 per kg through special public distribution system, which was extended a week ago.
To meet the demands of cardholders, the State government is purchasing toor dhal from the open market.
In the absence of its availability in other parts of the country, the government decided to import from Myanmar.
It would take two months for the dhal to reach the market, the officials added.
