‘Power holiday’ back in urban areas of State
T. Ramakrishnan
CHENNAI: The system of power holiday is back in operation in many urban areas of the State, excluding Chennai.
For the last few days, the Tamil Nadu Electricity Board has been resorting to load shedding for two hours at a stretch in several cities and towns. Invariably, the disruption is not extended beyond noon, according to a senior official of the Board.
When the system came into force on July 21, the disruption was for two hours in all the cities and towns except Chennai where it was for an hour. A week later, the Board relaxed it in view of rainfall in catchments of hydel reservoirs.
However, with the cessation of the rainfall, the power availability situation has again become critical. As the Board does not want to deplete the existing storage of the reservoirs, it has decided to restore the system of power holiday.
On Thursday morning, the “power holiday” was enforced in the urban areas covered by the Tiruchi, Vellore, Madurai, Coimbatore and Villupuram regions. Until 3 p.m., it was in force in the urban feeders served by the Chengalpattu circle.
Now, the gap between demand and supply is around 300 megawatt (MW) during day but it doubles during evening peak hours (6 to 9 p.m.) In the morning, the peak demand met by the Board is of the order of 8,000 MW. This goes up to 9,000 MW during the evening.
Noting that wind energy comes to the rescue of the Board, the official adds that the generation from wind mills ranged from 1,100 MW to 1,500 MW.
