Deferred joining period worries recruits

Sruthi Krishnan

Most IT firms that came for campus recruitment yet to set joining date

Firms have indicated tentative period; some say it could be in 2009

Students “free” to take up employment elsewhere

CHENNAI: Their seniors were working professionals by this time last year. But, that coveted tag seems elusive for students of the 2008 batch in many self-financing engineering colleges in Chennai and colleges in Salem, Coimbatore, Namakkal and Erode.

Compared to the joining period of one to three months IT companies gave recruits last year, students of the 2008 batch have been given six to nine month. Raju (name changed), who graduated from a self-financing engineering college in Chennai, holds an offer letter from an IT firm, but has started looking for another job. His joining date has been tentatively fixed for March 2009. “I cannot wait till then,” he says.

Tentative period

Placement officers from several self-financing colleges in Chennai say most of the IT companies that came for campus recruitment have not confirmed the exact date of joining.

They have indicated a tentative period with some stating that the joining date could be in 2009.

“We were sent a letter by an IT company asking us to inform students they were free to take up employment elsewhere while waiting for the date of joining,” says a placement officer from a self-financing college in Chennai.

Hexaware review

Commenting on the placement scenario, Deependra L. Chumble, Chief People Officer of Hexaware Technologies says: “In view of the general economic slowdown, Hexaware is currently reviewing and realigning its overall business strategy. The company, a domain specialist, is currently hiring for specialised niche skills and will continue to hire people depending on the need. Hexaware has deferred the joining date of freshers in line with the company’s overall recruitment plans.”

Asked whether slowdown in the market is leading to uncertainty in determining resource needs, T. Sridhar, Chief People Officer from Cognizant, says: “It’s true that with global economic uncertainty and various cyclical industry pressures, some clients are reassessing their budgets, reprioritising spending and elongating decision cycle, which is impacting the IT industry at large. Having said that, the fundamental drivers of demand for services from companies like Cognizant remain high, both in relative and absolute terms.”

A direct correlation between current requirements and resource needs cannot be made for the top players as they typically deal with multiyear contracts, which need to be planned well in advance, says Satyam Computer Services’ Head, HR Sourcing Rajan Kanagasabai.

Mala, (name changed) who graduated in June 2008 from a college near Erode, holds an offer letter from an IT major, has joined a course while waiting for her joining date. “I am worried,” she confesses.

Says a spokesperson for Tata Consultancy Services: “Campus recruits to whom TCS made offers last year have started joining the company as per schedule. TCS has always honoured campus offers. This year, irrespective of the market conditions, is no different.”

Mr. Sridhar also reiterates that Cognizant will honour all its commitments, irrespective of market conditions.

According to Somnath Baishya, Head, Global entry level hiring & campus relations, Infosys Technologies, “Infosys is not planning to stagger the hiring for the year. The total number of recruits that have joined us is 3,686 against 5,374 offers extended. We have received joining date extension requests from about 400 recruits owing to delay in course completion or results announcement.

“All entry level hires are expected to join us as per the normal scheduled date. We are in the process of releasing date of joining to an additional 5,300 [not included in the 5,374 offers above] recruits to join us during August and September. This is as per our original plan and no changes are being effected to this.”
